The Mark Varney Project
Это один из многих коммерческих джазовых проектов (коммерческий джаз - аж уши болят, однако на западе этим уже давно занимаются, даже Майлс этим очень много занимался) так что слушаем.
Я бы назвал всё это - жесткий Фанк/Фьюдж. Играют очень крутые музыканты (Frank Gambale, Garsed, Shawn Lane)!!

Добродушие дедушки, уже без ханжества размышляющего о жизни и любующегося ею, но уже знающего точно, сколько ему осталось. И от этого делается неуютно...

Piece by Piece - the second album from Georgia-born-chanteuse Katie Melua, and the successor to her multimillion-selling Call Off the Search begins teasingly with the soft-pedaled "come hither" jazz flirtations of "Shy Boy" and concludes with the whispering philosophical torch-song resignation of "I Do Believe in Love."
The two songs represent opposite ends of the emotional spectrum - sultry and kittenish on the one hand, solitary and ruminative on the other - but they also offer clues that the cutesy, crazy, easy listening Melua of Mike Batt's mentorship may be gradually acceding to the full bloom of self-determined musical adulthood. Melua's songs are often the more fretful and organic - the ghostly title track and the lovely "I Cried for You" are especially recommended, while the bluesier numbers (particularly the cover of the classic "Blues in the Night") seem shoehorned in gratuitously to match an anticipated demographic. Batt's contributions are melodic, memorably buoyant, and childlike. The Chinese-flavored "Nine Million Bicycles" and the naggingly catchy "Halfway up the Hindu Kush" are both charming despite their na?ve pseudo-ethnicity and currently offer, particularly when compared to something as ponderously wooly as "Spider's Web," a necessary fun counterbalance to Melua's burgeoning compositional skills. At this stage, Piece by Piece fits together nicely like a little jigsaw puzzle. And even if it didn't, Melua would still sound simply ambrosial singing from a washing machine repair manual.

Since her dense, varied, post-modernist eponymous second album illustrated that Sheryl Crow was no one-album wonder, she wasn't left with as much to prove the third time around. Having created an original variation on roots rock with Sheryl Crow, she was left with the dilemma of how to remain loyal to that sound without repeating herself on her third album, The Globe Sessions. To her credit, she never plays lazy, not when she's turning out Stones-y rockers ("There Goes the Neighborhood") or when she's covering Dylan (the remarkable "Mississippi," an outtake from Time Out of Mind). However, she has decided to abandon the layered, yard-sale production and pop-culture fixations that made Sheryl Crow a defining album of the mid-'90s. The Globe Sessions, instead, is the work of a craftsman, one who knows how to balance introspective songs with pop/rockers, one who knows how to exploit their signature sound while becoming slightly more eclectic. In that sense, the album is a lot like a latter-day album from her idols, the Stones — it finds pleasures within the craft and the signature sound themselves. That means that there are no surprises (apart from the synthesized handclaps, of course) — the Celtic homage "Riverwide" may be new, but it's not unexpected, much like how the whiplash transition in "Am I Getting Through" isn't entirely out of the blue — but that's not necessarily a bad thing, since The Globe Sessions has a strong set of songs. Since it lacks the varied sonics, humor, and flat-out weirdness of Sheryl Crow, it's never quite as compelling a listen as its predecessor, yet it is a strong record, again confirming Crow's position as one of the best roots-rockers of the '90s. -- Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine --

Michel Petrucciani always excelled in front of a live audience, and this 1992 concert with his father Tony accompanying him on guitar is no exception, though it's a shame it wasn't released until 2001, some two years after the pianist's death. An adventurous exploration of "Summertime" serves as a strong opener, followed by the playful waltz "Sometime Ago." The complex introduction to "All the Things You Are" and well disguised path into "My Funny Valentine" are by themselves worth the price of the CD. Michel gets a bit heavy-handed during parts of "Someday My Prince Will Come," overwhelming his partner's soft chords. There are solo features, too: Tony Petrucciani tackles Django Reinhardt's lovely ballad "Nuages" with finesse; while Michel is no doubt inspired by Bill Evans' many recordings of Miles Davis' "Nardis," he finds his own path during a dramatic improvisation. The sign off by the duo includes a rapid-fire take of "Billie's Bounce" and a gently swinging version of "Satin Doll." Recommended. -- Review by Ken Dryden --

Creating music that defies definition comes naturally to Gaelle, who grew up in an African-American community in New Jersey the daughter of Haitian parents. Exposed as a child to the percussive, upbeat music of Haiti—as well as to the grooving, hip-hop sounds of urban radio and new wave music videos on TV—Gaelle takes a naturally broad-minded approach to singing and songwriting. With a view to elevating the events of everyday life to the realm of poetry, Transient explores mystery, wit, honesty and subtlety—subjects that are increasingly rare in current popular music.
“I’ve always felt there could be a happy marriage between many styles of music without compromising artistic integrity,” Gaelle explains. “With this album I’d like to pave the way for other artists who would like to take a more innovative approach to expressing themselves. I also hope that what my music conveys will help some misunderstood person have a voice in this complex world.”
Singer/songwriter Gaelle Adisson started her life in music at an early age. Influenced by a mixture of her African-American childhood community and her parents’ Haitian identity, Gaelle found herself writing music in her teens that was a cultural hybrid. By the time she moved to Atlanta at the age of 18, the aspiring singer had already written dozens of songs, and at the insistence of a close friend, was asked to perform vocals on some house music tracks that were being recorded by the then-unknown producer Chris Brann. The pair hit it off immediately, and Gaelle launched the beginning of her recording career.
Eventually, Gaelle found herself performing and recording with several producers and musicians. The result of this period of productivity was the song “King of My Castle,” which she recorded with the Wamdue Project while she was still in her teens. This song became one of the most popular dance songs of the late 90's, and is still considered a classic in the U.K. dance scene. From that point Gaelle decided to start her production company, Speakeasy Music. During the period between her U.K. smash, and the recording of her debut album Transient, Gaelle concentrated on producing and remixing with her partner Eric Stamile.
Over the past ten years, Gaelle Adisson has secured a firm place in the fertile Atlanta music scene. With her debut full-length album "Transient," she showcases her rich talent and creativity, presenting an album of soul music with a strong sense of individuality and self-assurance. There's no question about Gaelle's talent as a singer, songwriter, and producer. With her honest, sensual and haunting style, Gaelle joins the space occupied by young female singers like Kelis and Res. She is unquestionably a soul songtress, but she's got that kind of style that moves her out of the Jill Scott/Angie Stone realm and into her own personal domain.
"Transient" is one of those CDs that oozes vibe. From the first track, "Falling," with warm guitar chords working over a polyrhythm, you know you're in for something very good and very different. If you don't know, then by the second tune, "Parkway," a surprising tale about a jealous girlfriend gone mad set to a slow R&B track touched with crunkitude, you are certain, Gaelle's definitely got some unique and special going on. Like many artists these days, Gaelle combines elements of various styles of music to make her particular sound. In doing so, she crafts a sound that seems at times to look from the inside out. Her breathy arresting voice is a perfect compliment for the blue-tinted tracks like "Separate Rooms" and "Moonsglow."

Blackmore"s Night - Winter Carols (2006)
Хотел сразу поместить альбом в "Нетленное", но как-то побоялся, т.к. еще его не слышал... Однако, в Ричи я уверен!! 
Т.е. это очередной рождественский альбом Blackmore's Night - "Winter Carols". На диск вошли лучшие рождественские песни средневековой Европы XV-XVII веков. Обложка альбома оформлена почти также, как и альбом "Under A Violet Moon" - все тот же немецкий городок Rothenburg, только на этот раз картина показывает город в зимнее время перед Рождеством.
Ritchie Blackmore: "Большинство старых Рождественских песен, танцев, были написаны в 1400'ых-1600'ых годах нашей эры. Это потрясающие мелодии! Я всегда был просто поражен их красотой - помню, что когда мне было 10-12 лет я ходил по домам в канун Нового Года и пел эти песни под гитару, чтобы заработать немного денег. Ну а теперь, когда мне уже намного больше лет, почему не заработать почти тем же способом еще немного денег?"

Ex-Thieves instrumentalist Saul Freeman aimed for his own dream-pop aesthetic when he placed an ad in the now defunct music weekly, Melody Maker. He had already worked with David McAlmont, but wanted his own creative outlet. Searching for an ethereal voice similar to the likes of the Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser and Shara Nelson (Massive Attack, Presence), solo artist Nicola Hitchcock ended Freeman's search when answering his request. The two instantly clicked, for Hitchcock also had a debut album under her belt and the two formed Mandalay in the mid-nineties. Incorporating trip-hop loops similar to Portishead and Hitchcock's vocal perfections, the duo earned props throughout the latter part of the decade in their native U.K., specifically with the albums Empathy and Instinct. Madonna even called Mandalay her new favorite band in fall 2000. Mandalay had signed to V2 by mid-2000 and prepped for their stateside major-label release, Solace, in spring 2001.
Nicola was born in London and moved to Devon (in the south west of England) three years ago. She inherited her ear for music from her father "he was a natural musician, could pick out a tune on any instrument". Alongside him at the piano she learned from an early age how to improvise around a tune. His first love was music and his first formal job was working as floor manager on a televised music show, so there were often test pressings and white labels - and always commercial radio - being played in the house whenever he was around. Her parents divorced when she was three years old and on the long car journeys between homes she'd make up stories and rhymes with her dad and sisters, instilling a love of words that continues on. For her 9th birthday she got her first guitar, taught herself a few chords and started making up songs.
During her teenage years and early twenties she performed as a backing vocalist for a variety of bands - doubling up on harmonica, accordion, electric & acoustic guitar, keyboard & percussion - and paid her dues gigging around London's live music circuit. She also got her first taste of working in studios. This experience led to writing and recording her own songs and becoming a regular solo performer on London's folk/acoustic circuit including the Half Moon in Putney, Acoustic Room at the Mean Fiddler, Waterman's Arts Centre & the legendary Bunjies folk clulb in the West End. She soon secured a record contract with FBeat/Demon records and a publishing contract with Rough Trade Music. Performing with her band at the Guildford, Cambridge and Phoenix Festivals she attracted guest musicians Danny Thompson on bass (Kate Bush, David Sylvian) & Neil Conti on drums (Prefab Sprout, David Bowie) to play on her debut album "A Bowl of Chalk" released in '93.
By this time however problems were escalating within the Mandalay camp and disagreements on business rather than musical issues proved unresolvable. The duo split, sadly just as the US were becoming aware of them.
During Mandalay's demise, Nicola's songwiring and vocal talents were sought by DJ Tiesto who chose her song "In My Memory" for his forthcoming album. With a deft remix from him, it became the title track and lead single for the album, the success of which led to a live performance with DJ TIesto at the Dutch Music Awards in 2002.
Sorting out all the post-Mandalay's business was difficult, took a long time and eventually took it's toll. Coupled with a major house move, followed by a car accident whilst battling with Glandular Fever/Epstein Barr virus (!) all meant that Nicola's energies for making music were seriously depleted. During this time however she continued to be sought by artists/musicians/dj's contacting her via the internet and email with requests for possible collaborations and she found herself in the fortunate position of being able to choose who to work with ... and how ... and when ...... she began working on tracks from avant garde composers Hector Zazou, Ryuichi Sakomoto, Lenny Ibizarre and the underground artist & DJ Chris Brann (Wamdue Project, P'taah etc). The resulting album "Passive Aggressive" stands a collection of her favourite collaborations from this time and is the first release on her own label Tempted.

With its roots in gospel, doo wop, and the sophisticated jazz-influenced singing groups of mid-century America like the Hi-Los, the a cappella vocal group Take 6 is both a throwback to an earlier, more genteel era of American music and a precursor for a number of black male pop groups of the '90s (most notably Boyz II Men). Its members include David Thomas, Alvin Chea, Cedric Dent, Mark Kibble, Claude V. McKnight III, and Joey Kibble (who replaced Mervyn Warren). McKnight and Mark Kibble caught the a cappella bug at Alabama's Oakwood College in the early '80s, forming a vocal group that solidified into Take 6 when singer/arranger Warren joined up in 1985. They signed a pact with the Reunion label in 1988, recording arrangements of Negro spirituals and newly composed material on their first album, Doo Be Doo Wop Bop! They were quickly picked up by Warner Bros.' Reprise label, for whom they started making smooth yet vocally adventuresome albums that defy pigeonholing other than the all-purpose a cappella label. Take 6 has also recorded Christmas carols, toured with Al Jarreau, appeared on Quincy Jones' all-star Back on the Block album, and on Join the Band (1994) they used instrumental backing for the first time. However, 1996's Brothers album indicated a turn toward commercial, sound-alike soul music that threatened to rob Take 6 of its unique identity. So Cool followed in 1998, with We Wish You a Merry Christmas appearing a year later. The new millennium was a time of rejuvenation. Beautiful World, released in April 2002, showcased an incredible instrumentation and Take 6's new musical approach.

The vocal sextet's debut release was critically acclaimed, capturing Grammy Awards in both the jazz and gospel categories. In a diverse selection of songs, Take 6 merges an a cappella sound with gospel and big-band jazz arrangements. Of the ten songs recorded, six are from the public domain, two are group collaborations, and the remaining two are from outside sources. Their harmonies and melodies are consistent throughout this outstanding collection of songs. In addition to being the lead vocalists on most of the tracks, Claude McKnight and Mark Kibble also produced the album, along with tenor Mervyn Warren. Эрика Райт (Erica Wright) родилась и выросла в Далласе. Ее мать была актрисой, и воспитанием Эрики занималась в основном бабушка. Именно она записала на примитивный домашний магнитофон первое вокальное выступление 3-летней Эрики. Она же научила девочку пользоваться этим чудом тогдашней техники, правда, кроме церковных гимнов ничего записывать не разрешала. Первую песню Эрика сочинила в семь лет. А ее дебют на сцене состоялся во втором классе - в школьной пьесе она вызвалась исполнить роль мальчишки-хулигана. Тогда она и почувствовала, что нет ничего интересней сцены. Музыки и песен вокруг всегда хватало. Девушка росла на старом соуле 70-х - Чака Хан (Chaka Khan), Стиви Уандер (Stevie Wonder), Марвин Гай (Marvin Gaye), потом увлеклась хип-хопом, постоянно что-то сочиняла и рифмовала и при каждом удобном случае читала рэп (выступая под именем MС Apple). Для никому не известной дебютантки результат был более чем убедительным. Альбом стоил того. Все треки, кроме одного, Эрика написала сама - утонченные и непосредственные, сильные и женственные, вдохновленные ритм-н-блюзом старой школы. Эластичный, парящий, прочувствованный голос Баду пел не только о любви и вере, но и о судьбе афро-американцев, о проблемах современных женщин. Ее глубокий соул-вокал с джазовым колоритом напоминал голоса кумиров ее юности - Билли Холидэй, Нины Саймон (Nina Simone) и Дайаны Росс (Diana Ross).
Через несколько месяцев тираж альбома достиг уже миллиона экземпляров. Эрика Баду, подогревая интерес к "Baduizm", провела для его раскрутки отличный концертный тур, выступая на разогреве у известных ритм-н-блюзовых групп и у рэпперов Wu-Tang Clan, а затем и с сольной программой. Представление о ее сценическом имидже и умении держать зал в напряжении дает живой альбом "Live", который певица успела подготовить еще до конца 1997 года. Даже концертные записи артистки пользовались настолько большим спросом, что "Live" почти повторил достижения дебютной пластинки, только в поп-чарте остановился на две строки ниже. В феврале 1998 года Баду прибыла на церемонию вручения Grammy, с которой унесла два почетных трофея. Диск "Baduizm" был назван лучшим ритм-н-блюзовым альбомом года, а сингл "On & On" победил в номинации "лучший женский вокал в жанре R&B".
В том же 1998-м году у Эрики Баду и ее бой-френда рэппера Andrе 3000 из группы Outkast родился сын. Роман Эрики и Андре оказался недолговечным, через год они расстались. Одновременно с воспитанием сына Баду начала отсчет своей актерской карьеры. Она снялась в фильме "The Cider House Rules", удостоенном премии "Оскар", по роману Джона Ирвина (John Irving). Эти 50 минут свободной, расслабленной музыки напоминали скорее воскресную джем-сессию хороших приятелей, чем четко структурированный, скрупулезно подготовленный альбом. Все композиции, равно как и фактурный и обаятельный саунд создавались коллективом Freakquency, который включал Баду, Джеймса Пойзера (James Poyser) и Рашада "Ринго" Смита (Rashad "Ringo" Smith).
Летом 2003 года коллекция наград певицы пополнилась тремя премиями Soul Train Lady Of Soul Awards, среди которых была и специальная награда самой интересной артистке года - Aretha Franklin Award 2003.

Chuck Mangione composed this music for a film soundtrack in 1978, but it quickly took on a life of its own when it was released as a two LP set, garnering a loyalty the film never enjoyed. Its film origins certainly show both in the purely atmospheric quality of some of the music and in the earnest vocals and awkward lyrics that introduce the suite and later reappear. My Point of View and Inventions and Dimensions found Herbie Hancock exploring the fringes of hard bop, working with a big band and a Latin-flavored percussion section, respectively. On Empyrean Isles, he returns to hard bop, but the results are anything but conventional. Working with cornetist Freddie Hubbard, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Tony Williams — a trio just as young and adventurous as he was — Hancock pushes at the borders of hard bop, finding a brilliantly evocative balance between traditional bop, soul-injected grooves, and experimental, post-modal jazz. Hancock's four original concepts are loosely based on the myths of the Empyrean Isles, and they are designed to push the limits of the band and of hard bop. Even "Cantaloupe Island," well-known for its funky piano riff, takes chances and doesn't just ride the groove. "The Egg," with its minimal melody and extended solo improvisations, is the riskiest number on the record, but it works because each musician spins inventive, challenging solos that defy convention. In comparison, "One Finger Snap" and "Oliloqui Valley" (alternate takes of both tracks are included as bonuses on the CD reissue) adhere to hard bop conventions, but each song finds the quartet vigorously searching for new sonic territory with convincing fire. Less overtly adventurous than its predecessor, Empyrean Isles, Maiden Voyage nevertheless finds Herbie Hancock at a creative peak. In fact, it's arguably his finest record of the '60s, reaching a perfect balance between accessible, lyrical jazz and chance-taking hard bop. By this point, the pianist had been with Miles Davis for two years, and it's clear that Miles' subdued yet challenging modal experiments had been fully integrated by Hancock. Not only that, but through Davis, Hancock became part of the exceptional rhythm section of bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams, who are both featured on Maiden Voyage, along with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and tenor saxophonist George Coleman. The quintet plays a selection of five Hancock originals, many of which are simply superb showcases for the group's provocative, unpredictable solos, tonal textures, and harmonies. While the quintet takes risks, the music is lovely and accessible, thanks to Hancock's understated, melodic compositions and the tasteful group interplay. Это, наверное, одна из самых значимых фигур в современном музыкальном мире (гитарном и окологитарном). Те чувства и энергию которую он вкладывает в каждый звук и виртуозная техника отличают этого исполнителя. Есть, конечно, технари которые достигли таких скоростей при исполнении всяких секвенций, что человеческое ухо уже не различает шум. Даже его учитель Joe Satriani уже давно признал своё поражение в гонке за звание “лучший гитарист”.

The double-disc is a melancholic hue of emotional discovery while showcasing tracks from the band's two previous albums, Empathy and Instinct, and limited-edition remixes by Tom Middleton, Boymerang, and Futureshock. The hushing "Not Seventeen" breathes with Hitchcock's brittle vocalics, and the free-flowing piano drops sets the album's overall tone. The subtle ambience of "It's Enough Now" exudes Mandalay's most fragile state of song. It's stripped with down-tempo string arrangements similar to "This Life," but the jazz-tinged lounge feel sets a mood that's far more enticing. There is a musical mystery to Solace. There is a sophistication matching the likes of Portishead's Beth Gibbons, and honestly it's Hitchcock's vocal impressions that surround the wintry soundscape on the album. Сегодня эта замечательная лирическая композиция известна и популярна, в основном, благодаря Джейсону Доновану (Jason Donovan), который исполнил и записал её в 1989 году. Однако, песня эта была написана в далёком 1960-м году авторами Gary Geld и Peter Udell, а первым её исполнителем считается коллектив "The Four Voices" (1960).
Популярность же этой незатейливой мелодии принесло исполнение её Брайаном Хайландом (Brian Hyland), когда песня вошла в десятку популярности в Billboard Hot 100 и UK Singles Chart в 1962-ом году. There may be hope for jazz fusion after all. If there were no other evidence, trumpeter Chris Botti's terrific album would be enough to give hope to even the most jaded bebop snob. This is that rarest of things: a completely unchallenging record that is also richly rewarding. Botti's approach is lyrical but spare; the production is dark, warm, and rich. A sense of deep and quiet romanticism pervades everything, and while Botti never really lets loose and wails, he manages to make his chops obvious on tunes like "Cubism" and the funky "On The Night Ride." Most of the songs are powered by a gentle funk groove, and one even features a vocal cameo by Gen-X poster girl Edie Brickell. Jazz snobs will get sucked into this delicious music despite themselves; fans of Kenny G and Najee will think it's "real" jazz and consider themselves sophisticated for liking it so much. Billy Joel teamed with Phil Ramone, a famed engineer who had just scored his first producing hits with Art Garfunkel's Breakaway and Paul Simon's Still Crazy After All These Years for The Stranger, his follow-up to Turnstiles. Joel still favored big, sweeping melodies, but Ramone convinced him to streamline his arrangements and clean up the production. The results aren't necessarily revelatory, since he covered so much ground on Turnstiles, but the commercialism of The Stranger is a bit of a surprise. None of his ballads have been as sweet or slick as "Just the Way You Are"; he never had created a rocker as bouncy or infectious as "Only the Good Die Young"; and the glossy production of "She's Always a Woman" disguises its latent misogynist streak. Joel balanced such radio-ready material with a series of New York vignettes, seemingly inspired by Springsteen's working-class fables and clearly intended to be the artistic centerpieces of the album. They do provide The Stranger with the feel of a concept album, yet there is no true thematic connection between the pieces, and his lyrics are often vague or mean-spirited. His lyrical shortcomings are overshadowed by his musical strengths. Even if his melodies sound more Broadway than Beatles - the epic suite "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant" feels like a show-stopping closer - there's no denying that the melodies of each song on The Stranger are memorable, so much so that they strengthen the weaker portions of the album. Joel rarely wrote a set of songs better than those on The Stranger, nor did he often deliver an album as consistently listenable. -- Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine --

John Coltrane's matchup with singer Johnny Hartman, although quite unexpected, works extremely well. Hartman, who had not recorded since 1956, was in prime form on the six ballads, and his versions of "Lush Life" and "My One and Only Love" have never been topped. Coltrane's playing throughout the session is beautiful, sympathetic, and still exploratory; he sticks exclusively to tenor on the date. At only half an hour, one wishes there were twice as much music, but what is here is classic, essential for all jazz collections. --Review by Scott Yanow--

For a trio that has been together this long (over 20 years), Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, and Jack DeJohnette still play with the enthusiasm of a group of people discovering each other for the first time. That's no clichй. One listen to "If I Were a Bell," the opening track on this live set, reveals how footloose, free, and excited these three can be when they encounter one another on the stand. Certainly, the near symbiotic relationship they have built over time makes the freewheeling feeling come easy. But that's a bit misleading in a sense, because if the listener pays the slightest bit of attention to how the rhythm section works with Jarrett, it becomes obvious just how much listening is going on in this conversation. Jarrett's timbral and dynamic palettes can change on a dime, and Peacock and DeJohnette never miss. The other wonderfully breezy thing about this set is that all of the tunes are from the jazz canon except for the title track, which closes the album and is a Jarrett original. From Frank Loesser's "If I Were a Bell," the band literally charges into Oliver Nelson's "Butch & Butch" at a furious tempo. DeJohnette pushes Jarrett on the tempo, and Peacock walks through the middle, balancing out not only time but harmonic equations in Jarrett's extrapolations on the melody. Nonetheless, despite the sprints - "Scrapple From the Apple" by Charlie Parker is another down the line - they never cease to literally amaze on the ballads. Here, "My Funny Valentine," "Autumn Leaves," and the just under mid-tempo "Someday My Prince Will Come" are given such impeccable lyrical treatment it's almost breathless. One of the most exciting tracks here, especially since it begins the last third of the program, is the inclusion of John Lewis' "Two Degrees East, Three Degrees West." The gorgeous stride Jarrett plays, which is all his, stands in amazing contrast to the original light-fingered version played by the composer. Jarrett invokes Fats Waller and early Ramsey Lewis in the blues feel while keeping his own sense of tempered attack through the shimmering shades of blue and green in the minor keys. This is one tough track in feel and emotion. The rhythm section doesn't just walk it either; they slip under and around Jarrett to fill out the edges, making this a beautiful dialogue piece. Up for It is a dynamite set, as refreshing, spirited, and innovative as any Jarrett has ever released, but full of good vibes too. --Review by Thom Jurek--

Sade's second album improved on the performance of her debut, as "Sweetest Taboo" was a huge hit and "Never as Good as the First Time" landed in both the R&B and pop Top 20. She was once again the personification of cool, laid-back singing, seldom extending or embellishing lyrics, registering emotion, or projecting her voice. This demeanor made her more desirable in the minds of many fans and was perhaps the ultimate misapplication of the notion of sophistication. Dianne Reeves is such a talented and warm singer that many jazz fans wish that she would stick to performing jazz. Reeves, here, mostly performs music that is folk and pop oriented, sincere renditions that actually have very little improvisation. Only the closing, "Make Someone Happy" (which has a trumpet solo from Marcus Printup) is jazz oriented. Otherwise, Reeves sings pieces that apparently mean a lot to her (including a couple songs that might be autobiographical) with a band that has appearances by keyboardists Billy Childs, George Duke and Eddie Del Barrio, altoist Kenny Garrett, bassist Stanley Clarke, drummer Terri Lynn Carrington and others. -- Review by Scott Yanow --
